🏞 Highlight Dive Sites

Silfra

Discover the extraordinary: dive into Silfra, within the UNESCO-listed Þingvellir National Park. This ancient rift, carved by a massive 1789 earthquake and continuously expanding (at about 2 cm per year), is filled with glacier meltwater that’s been naturally purified through porous lava rock for 30–100 years—resulting in visibility that often exceeds 100 meters, among the clearest on the planet .

Silfra unfolds across several breathtaking sections—from the dramatic Silfra Hall to the majestic Silfra Cathedral, a 100-meter fissure offering near end-to-end visibility, and into the peaceful, algae-draped Silfra Lagoon. The dive depths range between 0 and 30m with a maximum allowed depth of 18m

With its surreal underwater clarity, vibrant geology, and unmatched uniqueness, Silfra is a bucket-list dive that captivates both divers and snorkelers alike—and is considered one of the top dive destinations in the world.

Strýtan Hydrothermal Chimney

Dive into living geological history at Strýtan, the only hydrothermal chimney in the world that divers can explore. This towering limestone cone rises from 65 m to 15 m beneath the surface, slowly formed over more than 11,000 years since the last Ice Age.

You will be able to explore:

  • Arnarnesstrýtan – A compact 30×30 m marine garden bursting with life. Here, playful wolffish, curious cod, and delicate nudibranchs thrive among the geothermal formations.
  • The Grand Strýtan – The awe-inspiring 55 m-high thermal cone, still actively growing as mineral-rich 80 °C water flows from deep within the Earth.

Feel the warmth of the spring as you dip your hand into the vent, marvel at the minerals building the chimney in real time, and witness an ecosystem where geology and marine biodiversity meet in a way found nowhere else on the planet.

Bjarnagjá

Hidden on the edge of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Bjarnagjá is a narrow lava fissure that plunges to around 18 m, where crystal-clear freshwater seeps in from Iceland’s volcanic highlands and blends with the salty waters of the nearby Atlantic. This rare mix creates a shimmering halocline and a dive unlike anything else in the country.

The walls of the fissure are dark volcanic rock, sculpted by ancient eruptions and decorated with delicate marine growth. Visibility is often excellent, with light streaming down through the opening above and revealing the fissure’s dramatic contours. On calm days, you can explore deeper pockets where the saltwater influence is strongest, adding a sense of mystery to the dive.

Bjarnagjá is also steeped in geology — the site sits along the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, a reminder that you’re diving in one of the most geologically active places on Earth. Just a short drive from Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon, it’s the perfect combination of underwater exploration and topside relaxation.

Kleifarvatn

Tucked away on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Kleifarvatn feels like a dive site straight from another planet. Surrounded by black volcanic hills and steam rising from hidden hot springs, the lake has a mysterious, almost otherworldly atmosphere before you even get in the water. It’s the largest lake in the region and one of Iceland’s deepest, dropping to almost 90 meters in places.

The real magic happens just a few fin kicks from shore. Here, geothermal vents push warm water and gas up through the lakebed, creating streams of bubbles that dance to the surface. You can feel the soft, silty ground vibrating beneath you as the volcanic forces at work reveal themselves in real time. It’s like watching a geological process that’s been running for thousands of years—only now, you’re in the middle of it.

The underwater scenery is a stark contrast to the lush coral reefs many divers are used to. This is a place of dark volcanic rock, shifting sands, and the mesmerizing shimmer of bubbles rising all around you. On calm days, visibility can stretch far enough to take in the contours of the lakebed; on others, the geothermal activity and natural silt keep things moody and atmospheric.

Kleifarvatn sits right on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, meaning you’re diving on the seam between two tectonic plates. The entire area is geologically alive—earthquakes, hot springs, and volcanic activity have shaped it into one of Iceland’s most intriguing landscapes.

This is not just a dive; it’s a reminder of how dynamic our planet really is. Between the raw volcanic terrain above water and the surreal geothermal activity below, Kleifarvatn is a cold-water dive you’ll never forget.
