Recreational Freediving opportunities
Mabini Island – Site #1
Mainit Hot Spring: Freedivers can see volcanic bubbles rising from the seafloor around 18m, with colorful soft and hard corals nearby. Expect strong currents and sightings of frogfish along the rocky slope.
Twin Rocks: A classic Anilao favorite. Shallow twin rock formations (5–18m) teem with clownfish, batfish, jacks, snappers, and barracuda. Excellent for underwater photography and macro life spotting in mild drift conditions.
Arthur’s Rock: Gentle descent with plenty to see within 10–20m — soft corals, sponges, schools of sweetlips, emperors, and the occasional turtle. Calm currents make it beginner-friendly.
Cathedral: An iconic freedive with a concrete cross placed between two rocks at 18m. Surrounding sponges and corals host butterflyfish, angelfish, and nudibranchs — perfect for a spiritual underwater moment.
Mabini Island – Site #2
Koala: A gradual slope with lively reef scenes between 5–20m. Great visibility reveals schooling reef fish and macro critters along coral gardens.
Eagle Point: Features a wall that drops to 30m, though most life gathers shallower — fusiliers, snappers, and other schooling fish gliding near the edge. Currents vary but usually manageable.
Dead Palm: Ideal for macro enthusiasts. Around 10–20m you’ll find pygmy seahorses and small critters perched on sea fans and rocks.
Old Anchor: Little documented, but like most Anilao reefs, expect sponges, corals, and fish sheltering around what’s likely a historical anchor site mixed into boulder terrain.
Sombrero Island – Site #3
Mapating: Deeper spot with occasional strong currents and dramatic topography. Freedivers can glimpse into drop-offs and caves rich in pelagics — possibly reef or hammerhead sharks if lucky.
Sombrero Reef: Encircling a hat-shaped island, this shallow reef (8–25m) has stunning coral walls, bright visibility, and active currents that bring schools of reef fish.
Sepok: Gentle wall near Sepok Point, with soft and hard corals, ideal for relaxed exploration and spotting small reef dwellers.
Beatrice: A favorite for experienced freedivers — vivid coral hills and anthias clouds at 10–20m, frogfish and nudibranchs hiding among sponges. Expect strong currents and spectacular color.
Maricaban Island – Site #4
Daryl Laut Wreck: A sunken 1970s floating casino — shallow parts around 25–29m. Freedivers can hover over the upper sections to spot mandarinfish, pipefish, and shrimps.
Layag (Layag-Layag): Boulder-strewn reef zones with vibrant corals and steep slopes offering scenic drift dives. Great visibility and diverse sea life.
Bajura: Dynamic reef with strong currents and thriving marine populations — best for advanced freedivers looking for movement and schooling activity.
Kirby: Compact rocky reef alive with pygmy seahorses, frogfish, and lionfish around 5–20m. Often calm, making it a rewarding close-up site.
Maricaban Island – Site #5
Apols Point: Beautiful drifts over coral slopes and boulders down to 25m. Groupers, batfish, and the chance of spotting reef sharks create excitement.
Red Palm: Coral gardens thriving with reef fish — great lighting and ideal for photography within 5–15m.
Betlehem: Rich reefscapes full of nudibranchs, basket corals, and sponges. Perfect for all levels and photo enthusiasts.
Caban Cove: Sheltered and shallow (max ~15m), with sandy bottoms dotted by coral bommies hosting gobies and devilfish. Calm and picturesque.
Verde & Bonito Islands – Site #6
The Walls: Steep drop-offs with possible strong currents. Freedivers can enjoy pelagic sightings like tunas and trevally in clear blue water.
Pinnacle: A towering underwater structure with barracuda, triggerfish, and GT circling ledges around 18m. Excellent for dramatic visuals.
Agapito: Scenic coral rocks and schools of blue-lined snappers; relaxed setting for mid-depth freediving.
Light House: Exposed site with strong flow but high rewards — eagle rays and tunas glide around the drop-off edges.
